Breanne Nelson

LCSW-A

My passion is working with people who feel like their world is coming to an end either because something around them changed or because they desire to make a change. Sometimes this happens because of a death, divorce, sudden job loss, or a prolonged role as a caregiver. Sometimes it is the circumstances around us that change so profoundly – a partner with serious illness, a job change, or relationships changing for any reason, including gender transition or opening up to non-monogamy/polyamory. All of these situations call us to reinvest in life in a different way. It can feel like meaning and a sense of purpose evaporated and like you don’t even know who you are anymore. It can be hard to know where to begin. I can help.

MY APPROACH TO THERAPY

I like to start by really getting to know the person sitting in front of me and the experiences that have shaped their lives. My background in social work emphasizes how much we are shaped by the environments we come from and the environment we are in. Sometimes the skills that helped us in an old environment are what hinder us in the present. My framework includes affirming all sexualities and genders, health at every size, feminist, and anti-racist paradigms. It is important to recognize what we have power over and what we can change in a situation; it is also important to recognize what systems are unjust and larger than us. My therapeutic approach is eclectic and borrows from numerous modalities including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Somatics, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Humanist. I am a trauma-informed therapist. I love neurobiology and understanding how our brains work and how our brains can change. I can be quite irreverent, even about therapy. Laughter can often precede some pretty profound revelations. We can hold space for all of it.

I currently facilitate a group for Spousal Loss Support. I am interested in starting two more therapeutic support groups, one for partners where one member is undergoing a gender transition and another group for processing consensual non-monogamy. Please contact me for more information.
